Treasure Boxes

They call me a "dabbawalla"! ("Dabba" - "Box"). I have this compulsion to make objects that fit into each other, but I'm not OCD about it! I like how they fit into each other, how they work as receptacles for life's several functions. I also extend my series "Games People Play", to my treasure box-making, referencing board games of yore, now sadly being pushed aside by kids in the technological age! Clay needs to find its own way as I work with it.
These treasure boxes, as I call them, make great objects to demonstrate. It's all solid clay, several types of clay at the same time, often nerikomi'ed, and wire-cut, stamped, incised and stretched with silicates. The look needs to be fresh, alive and not fussed-over. It takes a while for onlookers who want to try their hand at making one such box, to let go of their clay-education; in fact, the non-clay persons are more adventurous with making these boxes!
Whenever possible, I try to soda-fire these objects, placing the two parts in two separate corners of the kiln to get varied firing effects.
