MANDALA POTTERY

Started in 1995, at Auroville, S. India, by the German born Chinmayi, Mandala over the years has welcomed the Dutch Anamika, Krishnamoorthy from the neighbouring village of Kottakarai, and Mumbai born-and-bred Adil. They are each artists with unique voices encompassing diverse expressions. Chinmayi, whose works carry an upward aspiration, literally reaching towards the heights, Anamika with her quieter forms, inward-seeking and contemplative, Krishnamoorthy with his grounded presence and pottery skills and Adil, who boldly traipses through clay creating works that loudly express spontaneity and a raw dynamism.

CHINMAYI

For twenty years in Germany, my field of interest and studies was social work and psychology. My search for a deeper meaning to life led me to Auroville in 1989. Since then clay has been my tool to concentrate and express myself. Only the birth of my son, Merlin, kept me away from the pottery for a year and a half. I am drawn by the endless offerings and discoveries that the medium of clay offers.
I will let our exhibits speak for themselves.

ANAMIKA
Stumbling upon clay more by chance than choice, ceramics has now become an increasingly important factor in my life.
There are several sources of inspiration for my work. One is beauty… Wherein I attempt to create a shape that is simple yet perfect, evoking a transcendental and impersonal beauty. The other is perspective through wall-panels where I explore visual and tactile depth. And finally, the element of surprise, taking everyday utilitarian pieces like tableware, out of context… and through this, revealing new meanings and interpretations
Working as a team challenges and supports me. Not surprisingly, it is with a song in my heart that I cycle to the studio every day!

ADIL WRITER
Production pottery, & studio line. The balancing act continues. Joyfully!
How else can I explain the camaraderie I share with my colleagues in making and glazing production pieces at Mandala Pottery ?
Or the vibrant energetics of our colourful glazes and (sometimes) unexpected forms, that meet the open-mindedness of buyers to our rather unconventional approach to ceramics.
At the other end of the thin clay line, my "own" work continues to combine clays, oxides, glazes, scribbles, lyrics, …. Floyd, Supertramp, Inxs, Ferry, the Upanishads, Sri Aurobindo, ….…to construct pieces on or off the wheel; and what comes through, for me at least, reminisces a future untold.
